Church Service Guide

Curious about coming to church?
Will I fit in?
Church is for everyone, it does not matter what you wear, who you are, or how little you know about church, you will be made a warm welcome.
There are lots of different services to suit all tastes and styles.
Here are some of the main types of services:
Family Service
If you have not been to church very often this might be a good place to start, these are informal services that explain basic beliefs, often accompanied with modern music and lots of noisy participation from all.
Children especially welcome. Usually it finishes with coffee and chat after the service - a great way to meet family and friends.
Common Worship
This is the principle Church of England Service sometimes known as Holy Communion.
Communion means, simply, 'togetherness' and this is a ritual to show the togetherness of Christians and God.
The Last Supper was Jesus' last meal before he died and he shared two signs with his followers: Bread as a symbol for his body being broken, and wine as a symbol for his blood being spilled when he was crucified. The service is easy to follow in modern language of today.
Book of Common Prayer
Sometimes known as BCP, if you like your liturgy in the traditional language of Shakespeare this is the service for you.
It is the service that has been used in church for over 400 years.
Some find there is a more spiritual or sacramental quality in this rather more formal types of worship.
Regular Morning prayer and Evensong often lay led, is in use in our villages.
Its format can be in either taken from Prayer Book or in today's language of Common Worship.
There is no communion but lots of beautiful singing of both hymns and psalms.
